School-Wide Positive Behavior Support

Winnetka follows the LAUSD Discipline Foundation Policy. Each classroom has a positive behavior support plan designed to promote an effective learning environment for all students. Grade levels have a hierarchy of consequences to fairly address inappropriate behavior.  Administrators provide guidance, assistance and support to teachers, students and families to maintain a positive school climate.

Positive Behavior Programs and Recognition - Emphasis is placed on character development. The school uses the 3Bs – Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful.  Students receive Star Student vouchers for “doing a whale of a job!” throughout the school day.  Each week the vouchers are collected and a drawing is held inviting children to pick something from the prize box.

Student of the Month Assemblies - Students selected from each class are recognized for outstanding achievement in academics, citizenship and attendance each month.  If your child is receiving an award, you will receive an invitation to attend the awards assembly.

The Second STEP program is used in all classrooms to promote school success, school connectedness and a safe and respectful school climate by directly teaching students the skills that strengthen their ability to learn, have empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems.

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey is used to share monthly themes:  Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood, Synergize (Together is Better) and Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best).
