Language Arts

Winnetka Elementary will be uses the BENCHMARK ADVANCE program.  This State adopted literacy program is aligned to the Common Core Standards. There are specific standards in reading, foundational skills, writing, speaking and listening, and language.

After students learn the foundation skills in reading, students are guided to read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it.  They learn to interpret words and phrases, analyze the structure of texts and assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text. Students learn to integrate knowledge and ideas, evaluate arguments and analyze how two or more text address similar themes or topics.  Finally, each year students read and comprehend more complex literary and information texts independently and proficiently.
